Dyson Fan The Dyson Air Multiplier

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Hey everyone,

Today’s article is dedicated to one of the technologies that Dyson has to offer that may be less well known that their line of vacuum cleaners; their fan. I have mentioned time and again that James Dyson is an engineer, one that respects the engineers to have come before him, and one that looks to continuously help in the advancement of new technologies.

Dyson took an idea and created one of the worlds most popular and effiecient vacuum cleaners, he has changed the way vacuums work. He reached further into technology and made improvements on handless air dyers, and now he has picked apart the standard household fan and created one the has a constant air flow and is much more attractive.

What is the Dyson Air Multipler?

They Dyson Air Multiplier is a twist on your conventional ocillation fan. Engineered by The Dyson Limited company the fan is available for sale online at the Dyson website. I have yet to see this available in any of my local stores, but wouldn’t be surprised if it will be available at Target, Walmart, and Best Buys, as they generally carry the Dyson line of vacuum cleaners. The Dyson Air Multipler currently comes in 3 styles ranging in price from 299.99 to $329.99.

In my opinion this is a pretty steep price for a fan, but I haven’t actually had the opportunity to see how well one of these works. Maybe it justifies the price. But I find that a little hard to believe. After all it does just blow air.

What makes the Dyson Air Multiplier Special?

According to the Dyson website the Air Multiplier uses “technology to draw in air and amplify it 15 times, producing an uninterrupted stream of smooth air. With no blades or grill, it’s safe, easy to clean and doesn’t cause unpleasant buffeting.”

The no blade, no grill part is pretty cool. Fan blades are magnets for dust, and they aren’t easy to clean at all. So if you have ever spent any time cleaning a fan you will absolutely appreciate that. But now for the important part. What the hell does buffeting mean?

Buffeting according to Google’s definition tool are “repeated heavy blows”. Dyson explains this as the heavy bursts of air you feel from a fan because each blade is actually chopping the air into pieces rather than producing a smooth and uninterrupted breeze like the multiplier does.

How Does the Dyson Air Multiplier work?

Well you have got me. I can’t explain it well enough to even try. Be sure to check out their page describing the process along with a pretty nifty animation.
