Dyson DC18 Accessories

I would have to say that one of the downsides to buying a Dyson vacuum is that they don’t come from the factory with very many accessories. Generally the vacuums will have 1 or 2 attachments in the box and that is it.

However it is not to say that Dyson doesn’t offer a great amount of accessories for each model of vacuum that they have. In fact The Dyson DC18 Accessories list is quite long. Let’s see what attachments and tools Dyson has to offer.

What is The Dyson Ball Asthma & Allergy?

I have recently seen a lot of people searching for the term Dyson Ball Asthma so I wrote this article to clear up a little confusion some may be having about the Dyson Ball vacuums. The Dyson Ball technology is currently available on two of the Dyson upright vacuums; the Dyson DC24 and the Dyson DC25. These two vacuums are almost identical in looks and functionality, except the DC25 is much larger than the DC24 and it comes in two different model types as opposed to just the All Floors model that the DC24 comes in.

Unfortunately neither of these vacuums is actually built as an Asthma & Allergy model, meaning that in reality there is technically no Dyson Ball Asthma that many of you have been searching for. But don’t be discouraged.

If the primary focus of your vacuum cleaner is to reduce allergen and asthma irritants, you might want to continue your search for a Dyson Asthma & Allergy model, but you don’t actually have to.

Every Dyson upright vacuum cleaner is actually certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. This means that no matter which Dyson model you choose you will get the benefits of a vacuum that reduces asthma and allergy irritants.

So if you have your heart set on getting a Dyson Ball model feel reassured that even though the Dyson DC24 and DC25 don’t come specifically in a Dyson Ball Asthma & Allergy model type you will still be getting and seeing the results of an asthma and allergy friendly vacuum cleaner.

The Asthma & Allergy Model is currently available on the Dyson DC17.

The Dyson Animal vs. Dyson Slim

The Dyson Animal

The Dyson Animal is a model type made specifically for picking up animal hair and pet dander. All of the models that are labeled Animal are equipped with a Dyson Root Cyclone TM, An extending wand, brush control, a lifetime HEPA filter, and a 5 year warranty, and a mini turbine head. The mini turbine head is an attachment that allows for maximum removal of pet hair from dense fabrics and upholstery and is also great for use in a car.

The Dyson Slim

The Dyson Slim is a model type made specifically for convenience. There is currently only 1 Dyson upright that is known as the “slim” and it is the DC18. The Slim model is also equipped with a Dyson Root Cyclone TM, An extending wand, brush control, a lifetime HEPA filter, and a 5 year warranty. However instead of having a mini turbine head that is great for picking up pet hair the DC18 slim has been engineered to weigh in less than 16lbs making the vacuum one of the lightest full size upright vacuums on the market.

The Dyson Animal vs. Dyson Slim

In my opinion these two models do not have enough similarities to make a strong comparison because they serve separate purposes. One vacuum in meant to provide better suction and power for houses that have animals, and the other vacuum is meant to be lightweight and easy to maneuver for those that don’t want the bulk of a standard full sized upright model.

If you are looking to compare two different Dyson models I would suggest you start by comparing two of the same kind or at least to models that serve a similar purpose. For example I think a better comparison would be: DC17 Animal vs. DC25 Animal or the DC24 vs. the DC25. The reason being is that when comparing an Animal vacuum to a slim vacuum you are basically forced to ignore their main features. By that I mean comparing the ability to pick up pet hair vs. weight isn’t a very strong search criteria.

When considering these two models I would ask myself one question. Do I want a vacuum that is lightweight or one that is designed to pick up after animals?

Dyson DC18 vs. DC24

The Dyson DC18 and DC24 didn’t originally come across in my mind as two vacuums that should rightfully be compared because of how truly different they are in their nature. The DC18 is a full sized upright vacuum while the DC24 is not so I thought that they might not make good competition for one another. But today I consider myself mistaken because although the two vacuums are very different in size the both share one huge selling point; they are both extremely light weight.

Before I get into any more comparisons of the two though I think we should take a short look at what each individual vacuum has to offer. So let’s begin.

The Dyson DC18:

The DC18 is known as the slim vacuum because it is a full upright vacuum cleaner that weighs in less than 16lbs which is very light for a full sized up upright. This vacuum comes with all of Dyson’s standard amenities including the lifetime HEPA filter, the expanding wand, the Dyson Cyclone Technology, push button brush control, and a 5 year warranty that covers parts and service.

The Dyson DC24:

The DC24 is known as the ball vacuum, or at least one of the ball vacuums, because it is one of a few models that is equipped with the new Dyson Ball Technology. However unlike the other models that carry the ball name the DC24 is about half their size and weighs in at a measly 11.65lbs. And as usual the DC24 is equipped with an extending wand, a Dyson Cyclone, a HEPA filter, brush control, and a 5 years warranty.

The Dyson DC18 vs. DC24

Comparing a full sized upright to one that isn’t didn’t make much sense to me before I started to look at the details. The DC24 is not a full size vacuum so I thought that the comparison would be like the much fabled apples and oranges comparison that I have heard so much about. However it holds one very similar feature to the DC18; it is extremely light weight. So that is where the focus of this comparison is going to lie. If you want a better comparison for the DC18 please check out my article Dyson DC18 Slim vs. DC25.

As I stated before with the DC18 being a larger vacuum the normal comparisons quickly become unfair, but when it comes to size and portability the DC24 Ball actually blows the DC18 away. The Dyson DC18 slim weighs what will seem like a heavy 16lbs compared to the Dyson DC24’s 12lbs. The adjustable height on the DC24 makes storage and carrying much simpler, and the Ball technology that is attached to the DC24 makes maneuvering while vacuuming a breeze compared to the DC18 as well.

So if you want to compare suction, canister size, ability to pick up different types of messes I would suggest looking at 2 full size vacuums, but if you are looking for the best vacuum for it’s size and weight I would suggest the DC24.

The Dyson Multi-Angle Brush

We don’t live in the 1970’s anymore which is probably a good thing for most of us as the styles were strange, the atmosphere was different, and the vacuums were not what they are today to say it kindly. But let’s forget about the first two, or at least try to and focus on what makes the vacuum cleaner so much better today.

I think a lot of it has to do with the availability of different accessories to use on different cleaning jobs. I can remember my old vacuum being a big ugly brown thing that had two accessories: a hard brush and a soft brush. Neither was a bad and I used them both, but they were limited to what they could do. Dyson however has a whole line of parts and accessories that I can buy for my new vacuum that I really love. My favorite being the Multi-Angle Brush because it makes cleaning fan blades easier than I could have ever imagined.

I know it doesn’t sound like a big deal, and that most of you already just get on your step stool and dust them off by hand, or ignore them like I used to, but the Dyson multi-angle brush is really a major convenience. It allows me to not have to get my face, clothes, or floors dusty from brushing the dirt off of the blades, I don’t have to try to lift my vacuum up off the ground, and I can get both sides of the blades.

What this tool is, is really an upright vacuum attachment specifically designed to go where your Dyson can’t go on its own. Although your Dyson is light I don’t think you are going to be lifting it over your head to get those fan blades, and even if you do that you aren’t going to get both sides of them. This goes for the tops and the bottoms of your shelves and cabinets as well as for the top of the fridge. They are all just hard places to clean.

But the Dyson multi-angle brush tries to make it easier for you by allowing you to adjust the positioning of the head so that it will lay flat on the top of a surface such as a fan blade meaning you can swiftly and simply just run it along the top of the blade to get all of the dust off. Or you can “angle” it to make it look inverted allowing you to clean the dust off of the bottom of the blade too.

With this tool I am now able to clean those areas that can quickly get gross without you knowing it on a regular basis meaning my house is better for my allergies and my son’s overall health.

In my opinion I would say take advantage of some of the new technologies that really make the vacuum a great tool for cleaning like the multi-angle brush or any of Dyson’s accessories.

Refurbished Dyson Animal Vaccuum

Buying a new sparkly home appliance can be a very big decision for your household because well they get to be pretty expensive when all costs are added up. That combine with the tough economical times many of us are facing make it even more difficult for you to get the tools needed to making your life better.

I unfortunately don’t have great news for you if you are looking to find a Refurbished Dyson on the market. Although it is not impossible to find re-manufactured or refurbished Dyson vacuum cleaners it isn’t always simple.

The best place I have found to look for a Refurbished Dyson Vacuum are at Amazon, here are a couple of the vacuums that currently have listed on their site.

Dyson Refurbished Vacuum cleaners are essentially just the same as new Dyson vacuums because the are remanufactured by the company themselves meaning that they are given the same care and precise development that every Dyson vacuum cleaner is given.

In order to make sure the you have all the confidence in your refurbished vacuum Dyson provide a 6 month warranty on all of their refurbished models.

If you don’t quite feel comfortable with that 6 month warranty be sure to check out the extended warranties that amazon sells for The Dyson vacuums as well. They start at small $29.00 a fee you really can’t beat.

Dyson DC25 Animal Vacuum Cleaner Ball

The Dyson DC25 Animal Vacuum Cleaner Ball ….

Wow! that is a mouth full. This name as are most of the Dyson products names is a little bit longer than it should be, so today I thought I would break it down and explain to you what makes the name, and the vacuum.

Let’s start with Dyson DC25 Vacuum Cleaner and remove the rest for a second. The Dyson DC25 is an upright vacuum cleaner from the Dyson Limited Corporation. It is a bag less vacuum cleaner and is one of Dyson’s most popular models.

Now let’s throw Dyson DC25 Animal Vacuum Cleaner together and see what we get. The result is a little bit more focused because now we can realize the the DC25 vacuum comes in two different styles The DC25 animal and the dc25 all floors model.

The Dyson DC25 Animal model is made to pick up animal hair and dander and comes with a special tool called the mini turbine head which is specifically designed to pull animal hair from tough carpets like upholstery.

Finally we have made it to the full phrase Dyson DC25 Animal Vacuum Cleaner Ball. The Ball is referring to Dyson’s Ball technology which in my opinion is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the vacuum cleaner. What the Dyson ball is, is a way for you to easily move your vacuum around furniture and your house without being stuck in the old fashioned back and forth motion all other vacuums use.

As you can now see that each word in the title means something else to the Dyson Model, and although it maybe a mouthful it is worth it because each word presents a new feature to the vacuum cleaner.

Dyson DC17 Maintenance

Today I have put together a little something about the types of maintenance that are involved with your Dyson upright vacuum cleaner. The DC17 is a popular model, so I thought I would focus on maintaining it, however the practices that follow will for the most part be the same for all Dyson vacuum cleaners.

I for some reason have a tendency to use cars and computers as my examples on in my articles so I will continue with the trend. When it comes to providing a routine maintenance schedule you are probably pretty used to it as you do it already for your car. You change the oil every 3,000 miles, the transmission fluid every 60,000 miles, and your tires when needed. Well it is time to treat your vacuum cleaner with the same respect.

When maintaining your Dyson DC17 you will want to create your own maintenance schedule, something you can realistically keep in order to ensure your Dyson is always performing at it’s best.

Here are my recommendations.

Empty the canister every time you vacuum. It isn’t an must do, but you don’t leave garbage in your car do you? If you keep the canister clean you will be at the ready any time you need it and you will be suspect to any clogging that may be occurring.

Wash your filter once a month. Again, this isn’t a must in fact Dyson recommends you do it every couple of months on their site, but I suggest you create a routine so you get used to keeping your filter clean. It is better to take the extra time and be ready with a clean filter when you need it rather than having to clean and dry the filter while you are rushed.

Remove any long hair from your brushes. Next time you clean out your hair brush do the same for your vacuum. It is having the same problem, take a second to clean it up so your brush can do its job.

Other maintenance might involve replacing a hose or buying a new filter, but outside of that you should remember that you have a 5 year warranty that covers all parts and labor on your Dyson upright vacuum cleaner. So don’t try to become a Dyson mechanic because you have a service department simply waiting to fix any problems that occur.

Here a More detailed instructions about cleaning your Dyson filter as well as removing and emptying the Dyson Canister.

Dyson DC18 Do I Turn The Brush Off

Every Dyson upright vacuum comes with what brush control, or the ability to turn your brush heads on and off. Many of the models have a button right next to the power switch above the canister and others have them right by the handle to make turning the brushes off more conveniently.

I seem to be running into the question a lot…

When should I turn the brushes off when vacuuming with my Dyson DC18, DC25, or [Insert Model Number Here].

Well the actual answer is pretty simple: whenever you want or feel it is necessary to protect a surface or when you want the brush to help you pick something up.

But, I am sure that is not the answer you are looking for so let’s look at why Dyson made it possible for you to turn off the brush.

The purpose behind turning off the brush is to protect surfaces that you wouldn’t want to use a brush on. The brush itself does not affect the suction power of the vacuum meaning that you that your DC18 or DC24 Ball or whatever model you have is still going to work the same as when the brush is on.

So what surfaces might you want to protect? Well most of the time I turn the brush off when I am vacuuming my hardwood floors and some of my harder rugs because I don’t want to leave any scratch marks on them, or take the chance of pulling out any threads that keep it bound together.

But I might suggest that you consider turning the brush off when you are also vacuuming your ceramic or laminate flooring. Like I mentioned before the vacuum will have the same amount of suction available as when the brushes are on, but now you won’t take the chances of leaving any unwanted wear and tear marks on your floor. Plus if you find that you have a mess that you need the brushes help with you can always turn in back on for a quick second before proceeding to the rest of the floor.

I hope that answers the question of Dyson DC18 Do I Turn The Brush Off When…?

Dyson Patents and Technology

Technology has brought a lot of change to our lives; cars can tell you where to go, they can call for help if you’ve had an accident, and some can even stop themselves from having accidents. And while technological change can easily be seen in the automotive and computer industries technology is not something that you generally think about when you are buying a small home appliance like a vacuum cleaner.

James Dyson and the engineers at the Dyson corporation on the other hand are constantly working to create new technology to make their vacuum cleaners stronger and more productive.

Dyson is probably the market leader for research and development in the vacuum cleaner field as they are always creating new ideas on how to make the vacuum work better. James Dyson had over 5000 prototypes made before he every successfully manufactured his first Dyson cleaner.

His hard work has paid off.

The Dyson Ltd. corporation are currently proud owners of nearly 1000 patents for the technology that they put in their upright, canister vacuum cleaners, and their hand dryer.

The design vacuum cleaner is equipped with the Dyson patented motor, the Dyson Patented Cyclone and now many of the new upright models are being equipped with the Dyson patented ball technology.

As you can see just from that brief introduction the Dyson technology spans a wide area of application. The motor for power, the cyclone for great suction that will never be lost, and the ball for the swift and flexible movements needed to make vacuuming a little bit easier.

The Dyson is a modern marvel in vacuum technology a feet not many other companies can say the have accomplished. Their insistence to improve the vacuum cleaners performance along with great engineering has given them a huge market advantage as the hold the key “or patent” to many great technologies.

Dyson DC24 vs. DC25

Comparing Dyson models is often one of the most frequently addressed problems consumers find themselves having because of how well Dyson’s compare to other vacuum cleaners. The question isn’t what brand of vacuum the should look at, but what model Dyson will suit their needs the most.

The Dyson DC24 vs. DC25 is quite the popular search meaning that people really want to know more about these Dyson Ball vacuums. Well the good news is I am here to give you the scoop, but the bad news is these to vacuums are very very similar so the comparison is going to be quite short.

The Dyson DC24 vs. The Dyson DC25:

I guess this comparison really comes back to the age old question; does size really matter? For some it does for others it doesn’t but that is really the only question you can ask when comparing these two vacuum cleaners.

The Dyson DC24 and Dyson DC25 upright vacuum cleaners are sisters maybe even twins because when it comes to everything accept size they are exactly the same.

Both vacuum cleaners are equipped with Dyson’s Cyclone technology, both are upright vacuum cleaners with lifetime hepa filters, both are equipped with the Dyson ball technology, both have a 5 year warranty, both are all floor vacuum cleaners with push button brush control, and both have a extending wand for reaching the high areas and tight corners.

So what makes them different? Size.

I own the DC24 and it is perfect for my 850 square foot house, my dad on the other hand has a lot more space that I do and he is using the DC25 in his monster of a home.

The DC24 is perfect for people that need a vacuum that is more easily stored, a vacuum that can get the job done quickly without having to lug around a full size vacuum, and for those that have small houses.

The DC25 on the other hand stands a little bit taller and has a larger canister which is great for full size or larger houses. If you have a large room with a lot of carpet you will probably find yourself needing to empty the canister on the DC24 more than once while with the 25 you would be set to do the whole room.

Did This Help?

If you are looking to compare Dyson vacuum cleaners I would actually suggest reading our other Dyson Comparisons as they will be much more helpful that this comparison.

Before I dive into my assessment on which of the Dyson DC models is the better of the two I highly recommend you take some time to read the more detailed explanations of the individual vacuums that I have written about each model as they might be a better indicator of which vacuum is right for you.

More information on the Dyson DC17 and the Dyson DC25.

About the Dyson DC17 & DC25:

The Dyson DC17 & DC25 are both upright models in Dyson’s range of vacuum cleaners. Each vacuum is offered in both the Dyson Animal and the Dyson Asthma and Allergy styles. They are both also equipped with a life-time HEPA filter, finger tip brush control, extending wand, hygienic canister, 5 year warranty of parts and service, and an ergonomic handle for carrying.

What makes the two vacuum cleaners different is the new techonology that has been added the the DC25. The DC25 is equipped with the Dyson Ball technology that make a vacuum easy to move in it’s nature. Most vacuums are on a rigid frame that only allows for forward and backward movements, and the DC25 isn’t. The Dyson Ball lets you move in any direction by simply turning your wrist the direction that you want to go.

Dyson DC17 vs. Dyson DC25 Results:

The Dyson DC25 Ball vacuum cleaner is the cleaner that I would prefer to own because I love the Dyson Ball technology. Both vacuum cleaners come in Dyson Animal and Dyson Asthma and Allergy Models, Both are equipped with the Dyson Cyclone technology, and both have the hygienically easy to empty canister, meaning that the vacuums actually have very few differences in the way the operate and pick up dirt and dust.

The decision to go with the DC25 is then completely based on my personal enjoyment of the ball technology that makes maneuverability easy. I currently am using the Dyson DC24 in my home which is the DC25′s little brother. The DC24 is an exact replica of the DC25 but it is smaller in stature. With my experience using the ball I have found that is does everything that they say it does and anybody that has a tight space or a lot of furniture could really benefit from using it.

However choosing the right Dyson for you can be a difficult tasks as each model has great benefits and could possess the trait that you need, so I suggest you keep looking and maybe even check out our comparison of the DC18 Slim vs the DC25.

Cleaning Your Dyson DC18

Cleaning your Dyson DC18 or any of the Dyson upright vacuum cleaners is quite simple for a few reasons. The first being that Dyson has made dismantling and reassembling their vacuums very easy with push button releases. The second being the the time intervals between cleanings are much longer than those of normal upright vacuum cleaners.

But where do we start?

Well let’s do that basics first. Unlike most bag less vacuum cleaners you don’t have to break your Dyson down and clean every inch of it every time you use it. The only per use cleaning I would recommend doing to cleaning out the canister as it fills up.

How to Clean Your Dyson’s Canister?

  1. Unplug it. Always unplug your vacuum before removing any of its components
  2. Release the canister from the vacuum by pressing the button on the top of the ergonomic handle.
  3. Place the canister above the trash receptacle, with the bottom of the canister surrounded by the bag / can so no debris can escape elsewhere.
  4. Pres the release button on the top of the ergonimic handle again to release the bottom of the canister.
  5. Gently tap the canister until any remaining dirt/dust falls from the canister
  6. Close the canister’s bottom lid and place it back on the vacuum.

Cleaning out the canister should be your routine, but what about cleaning the filter? The Dyson filter is located in the lid of the canister so many of the steps are going to seem familiar to you already. The best part about cleaning the filter on your Dyson DC18 or any Dyson vacuum is that it only has to be done once every 3-6 months.

How to Clean Your Dyson’s HEPA Filter?

  1. Unplug it. Always unplug your vacuum before removing any of its components
  2. Release the canister from the vacuum by pressing the button on the top of the ergonomic handle.
  3. Release The Canister’s lid by pressing the catch release located toward the top of the canister.
  4. Pull the filter up by the tab to remove it from the vacuum.
  5. Soak in cold water for 5 minutes or more. Do not use any detergent, soap, or a washing machine
  6. Let the filter dry for 12 hours. Do not use a dryer, flame, microwave, or oven to dry the filter.
  7. Put the filter back in the vacuum, but make sure it is completely dry.
  8. Close the canister’s bottom lid and place it back on the vacuum.

There are not many components on a vacuum cleaner that need to be cleaned in order to keep it running great, but one that is often over looked is the cleaners brush. If you are noticing that your brush is getting stuck during vacuuming it mind be time to take a look at it and see if there is any hair clogging it up. You can easily remove the hair with your finger tips as their is really no other way to get it out.

Cleaning your brushes and hoses isn’t required but if you see them getting dirty and clogging up it won’t hurt to clean them with some water. Remember to always make sure your vacuum is unplugged and you never reconnect any parts or accessories that may still be wet.
